Ken & Janine are amazing staff. Such friendly people. The house is just like you have stepped into your own home. Great feel, lovely rooms, and kitchen. Thanks for such a great time.

I felt like I was staying at the house of a friend who's really low-maintenance. It's awesome because they just throw you the keys and show you around and they just want you to be comfortable. The two proprietors were really awesome and friendly and lovely. Other guests were the same. It's not a party hostel, thankfully, as I'm not into that, but it was a warm home-base, and I really felt privileged to be there.

My wife and I loved it!  Ken & Janine really know how to make you feel at home.. Such a warm kind of place is very hard to find, I know, I’m almost eighty and I’ve been traveling for a very long time.  There is just no place like it in North America.

I am reluctant to be honest here, because I’m afraid telling you what I really think wil mean I’ll never be able to get a reservation in this place in the future because it will be all booked up. This is a little piece of heaven in downtown Vancouver. From the moment you step through the yellow glass and wrought iron front door, you are home. The building was erected in 1896 and was originally a residence for nuns. Later, it was used by rumrunners smuggling liquor to the US during prohibition. (During renovations, Ken and Janine uncovered an old vault the smugglers had used.) The building was empty for many years before Ken and Janine took it over and began renovating. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. There’s a large communal kitchen guests can use, a sitting room with TV, dvd and lending library, a smokers’ lounge upstairs and a beautiful open air deck garden which will soon include a hot tub. (Sauna coming for the winter months in one of the upstairs bathrooms.) The little touches make this place so special. Ken, a wilderness guide, carpenter, photographer and writer is also an astronomer, and has a telescope he built himself in the corner of the common area. On clear nights, he sometimes brings it up to the deck so people can look at the moon or the planets. They installed stained glass in many of the doors. The cheerful yellow front door was brought from India. Janine, an art therapist and artist, personally scraped the old wood with a razor blade before they refinished it. Aside fromthe upstairs loft, with four beds, rooms have shared bathrooms, but they are lots of bathrooms so there’s no inconvenience. You can’t beat the location in downtown Vancouver, not far from the Waterfront, Gastown, Granville Street. What really makes it special? Ken and Janine. This place is a labor of love, and that spirit permeates the whole place and attracts the kind of travellers you’ll instantly love, and remember always. Food: There are some good $3 breakfasts to be had just around the corner on Dunsmuir street. The best is the little Hungarian restaurant, painted in blue and yellow. They also have excellent goulash, perogies and strudel. Ken and Janine can direct you to a great pizza place that sells huge slices for $1.25. Or buy groceries and prepare your own food in the communal kitchen. Transportation: You can take the airporter bus from the airport to the Hotel Vancouver, three blocks away. Caution: Evidently, the nearby church sometimes has bell-ringer auditions Saturday mornings, with two hours of tuneless chimes starting at 9 a.m. Bring ear plugs if you hope to sleep in on Saturday, or, for a few laughs, get up early and go up to the deck to have coffee and critique the bell ringers with Ken and Janine.

Nice people, great location, close to everything, good rates, not too busy. Nice place, and we would stay here again, and would recommend to friends when staying in Vancouver.

The Urban Hideaway Guesthouse was a pleasant surprise. The loft room was immaculately clean and spacious with beautiful sky lights. The entire "guesthouse" was more than we could have possibly asked for.

I think we would have thought Vancouver was a lovely city - but having stayed here we thought it was one of the best cities in the world. It's a great, friendly, clean place. A home away from home. We're now planning to stay another day.

We have stayed here twice already and will definitely be back. We always feel welcomed, as if it is a home away from home. The rooms are spotless and the beds are very comfortable. The location is perfect and we feel very safe there.

This is a charming house, very close to the centre of Vancouver and major attractions. It was a real home from home, relaxed, friendly and comfortable. I'd certainly go again

This is the best place I have ever stayed in!  After three years motorbiking around the world I was really surprised to find such a laid-back, relaxed, warm place in the middle of such a big city.  It felt like I was staying at a friends house.  The kitchen is big and fully stocked with gourmet equipment, including very expensive pots, pans and good german knives! :)  I love to cook and it was nice to be able to prepare our own meal, sit down and enjoy it with a glass of wine with our new friends –we met many wonderful people here.. And my brother met his bride-to-be, for the first time,  in the romantic roof-garden too!  What a great end to an epic journey!  Keep it up Ken & Janine.

AH REUM CHOI

It was wonderful!!

This place was great! Easily makes my top 5 favourite places to stay ever! Wish there was a place like this in every city

Iseult Coffey

A lovely break from the North American tendancy to rather souless franchises. Very nice space - lot's of light, and the rain made a very dramatic sound on the skylights. I would recommend this place highly!

Karen Sloane

This is an awesome, refurbished old victorian home right in the heart of Vancouver, absolutely close to everything! A friendly city in a Property run by a super friendly, easy-going couple. We'll be back for sure

Matthew Horning

This was a great place to stay! Janine and Ken are both very nice, and made us feel at home. They also really care about making it a nice place to stay, making improvements all the time - so I expect it to keep getting better. It is within walking distance of just about anywhere in Vancouver you'd want to go, and very close to the bus stops for exploring further away. The guesthouse is only slightly more expensive than a property for two people, and is 100 times nicer than any property I've ever stayed in. On our next trip to Vancouver we'll almost certainly stay here again.

Timothy Schofield

Great hosts and a super cute old house with cats, in a superb downtown location, lots of dvds to watch in the evenings, or hit the clubs, pubs, or cannabis cafe nearby

Cavan Mok

Ken and Janine were great hosts! Very friendly and very knowledgeable, great suggestions and ideas for our day planning. The location was better than expected, just minutes away from everywhere we wanted to go. Thanks once again Ken and Janine!

Ciara Baker

This is the most fantastic property I have ever stayed in. It felt like home from home. If you are looking for somewhere clean, very comfortable, great value for money and most of all totally welcoming then this is the place for you.

Sara Greer

If you have American license plates, find a secure parking garage. We parked a couple blocks away in a garage with no security and our window was smashed in and a couple things stolen.

Peter Read

A fantastic place to stay in Vancouver -felt like a home away from home! Great free pancake mix, eggs and bacon which you can cook for breakfast. Ken and Janine are very friendly and helpful. Thank you for an excellent stay

a secret home away from home

Tim Porter

This place is truly amazing - from the moment you walk up the stairs, and look into the little garden, it feels like home. The hosts, Ken and Janine, are some of the most genuine and interesting people you are likely to meet. The location is very central and it is easy to walk everywhere, or borrow a bike if you need to! Heaps of little personal touches which made the stay even better - breakfast, beautiful cats, great artwork, DVDs to borrow.. We found this place so difficult to leave and thought it was a shame it wasn't at the end of our trip - now all the other places we stay in have a lot to live up to!!

Laura Menendez

YOU OUGHT TO TRY THIS PLACE!! IT'S SOOOOO NICE!!!!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Helpful friendly hosts, peaceful atmosphere,
a homeful touch, comfy beds, huge kitchen, great breakfast, downtown centered, all in all an oasis inmidst of all the skyscrapers.
A mix between a hostel and a B&B, great place to meet travelers from allover the world. A home away from home!

This is a wonderful place for people who want to feel like they are living in a cool apartment in the middle of Vancouver! Lots of characters, plants, nice hosts...yes you do have to share bathroom, kitchen, etc. and some restrictions (e.g. quiet hours) so that everyone can stay comfortably. If you can't handle them or are very sensitive to noise, this place may not be for you - since it's in downtown it can be a bit loud. But other than that, I highly recommend it! In summer they need 5 weeks notice.

This guesthouse is amazing - I can't believe that a place like this exists in downtown Vancouver. The location is perfect - walking distance to everything in downtown. The setup and kitchen is friendly and welcoming. I never felt like I was intruding in the owner's personal space. To the contrary, they made me feel very comfortable, and were super helpful. The rooms were quiet and clean, and enough bathrooms etc. that I never had to wait. They even have bikes you can borrow to go around town, and are happy to suggest routes and places to go. The B&B feels very safe, and as a single female travelling on my own, was a great place to stay.

I was in Vancouver for a wedding, and the owners were very helpful - going to the effort of helping me get ready and helping figure out how to get there. I couldn't recommend this place enough - it is affordable, beautiful, and incredibly convenient, and run by two of the nicest people in the city (and for Vancouver, that's saying a lot!).

Best place we've ever stayed in!

..the Urban Hideaway is like a little oasis. This guesthouse is one of the last remaining original downtown homes and it's survived since 1896. There's a big sunny rooftop garden and they will lend you a bike to get around.

Discover an unexpected hideaway tucked between the skyscrapers downtown, only a block from the Granville Skytrain.. THIS IS THE FINEST GUESTHOUSE IN THE WORLD! –in our humble opinion.

A rare downtown guesthouse is the Urban Hideaway with its rooftop garden, bike loan and convivial communal kitchen. Doubles cost from C$99
